Lindsay Davenport falls to Dinara Safina at Sony Ericsson Open

Lindsay Davenport produced a stunning victory yesterday, sending home world No.2 Ana Ivanovic, but the American couldn’t repeat such an impressive level of tennis in the last 16 and fell to Russian Dinara Safina 6-3 6-4.

In other completed matches on Monday, world No.1 Justine Henin saw off Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-2, while Venus Williams defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3 and set up a quarterfinal against Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Shahar Peer 7-6 6-3.

  1. Marija, did you get to see this match? I didn’t, but the first thought I had was that Lindsay isn’t yet up to two days in a row in that humidity.

  2. Unfortunately, I couldn’t watch the match. My first thought was that Dinara would fall to inspired Lindsay, but that’s what’s so great about tennis — you never know in advance. There are so many factors that influence a player’s game, and we who just observe them rarely have the full picture.
You may be right about humidity, I’m not sure. Lindsay won Bali, and I believe it’s humid there too.
