Serena Williams to play the 2009 Hyundai Hopman Cup with James Blake

American Serena Williams is making her return to the Perth Hopman Cup in 2009, teamed up with James Blake, with whom she won the tournament in 2003.

Williams will make her third appearance at the Hopman Cup, where she has never lost a match. Last year, nine-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams won the title in Perth, partnered with Mardy Fish, so she will be defending her title in 2009.

Here are the Hyundai Hopman Cup teams in seeded order:

(2) Russia: Dinara Safina and Marat Safin
(3) France: Alize Cornet and Gilles Simon
(4) Australia: Casey Dellacqua and Lleyton Hewitt
(5) Italy: Flavia Pennetta and Simone Bolelli
(6) Germany: Sabine Lisicki and Nicolas Kiefer
(7) Slovak Republic: Dominika Cibulkova and Dominik Hrbaty
(8) Winner Asian Hopman Cup (The Asian Hopman Cup will be played November 12-15 in Kazakhstan.)

The Hyundai Hopman Cup is the Official Mixed Teams Championship of the International Tennis Federation. The 21st one will take place at the Burswood Dome from 3 – 9 January 2009.

  1. What about the team up of Dinara and MArat? Is this still viable? I have seen on TV that Marat’s considering to retire after his loss in Paris.

  2. Yes, Safin should be playing the Hopman Cup. As far as I know his plans for retirement are not definite, it’s just maybe.
