Jelena Jankovic’s terrible 2009 season is rapidly going even more downwards. After losing her opening match at the previous tournament, the BNP Paribas Open, Jankovic succumbed to Gisela Dulko in her opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open. Venus and Serena Williams, on the other hand, continued to do well, and both advanced to the third round in straight sets.
We have to mention that Dulko didn’t defeat the third-seeded Jankovic easily. Jankovic led 4-2 before losing the first set, and then in the second led 5-2 with two set points in that game and another at 5-3, and also led 5-2 in the tiebreak. The last year’s runner-up eventually lost 6-4 7-6(5).
Five-time Sony Ericsson Open champion Serena Williams, the No.1 seed, defeated American wildcard Alexa Glatch 6-2 6-3, while fifth-seeded Venus Williams was down a break in both sets against Shahar Peer, but won 6-3 6-3. (source: Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, photo: Ralf Reinecke)
Life’s most merciless irony strikes JJ yet again, for her arduous off-season preparation rebounds as the primary cause of her monumental failures thus far in the year. “Oh, the situational irony…”, Jelena pleads to her new fitness coach.
It is ironic. I’m especially sorry because JJ was really trying to stay No.1 and become better than ever, and what she got was the exact opposite, her hard work ruined her game. I don’t know what to say…
Yar… i wish JJ stick to her defensive approach instead of changing to a more offensive one.She is better at defending and is better off instead of having lots of unforced errors when trying to attack
Jelena wanted to prevent injuries and that was also one of the reasons for her extraordinary training. But it got me thinking, maybe JJ simply isn’t like other players, she seems to be supposed to always run for her life in matches, and reach the semis playing like a wounded animal, even when we thought she would exit in the first round.
And also that famous schedule of JJ’s…
Maybe not the same rules apply to JJ and the “normal” players, if you know what I mean. She tried to become “normal” too, and got it all wrong.
I READ THAT JJ’S MOTHER HAS SOME PROBLEMS WITH HER HEALTH AND OF COURSE THIS FACT REFLECTS ON HER GAME.
ANYWAY, WISH JJ’S MOTHER RECOVER AND FEEL ALRIGHT!
Daniel, it’s true. Jelena herself admitted that personal problems are bothering her.
