Belgrade, Serbia, to host a WTA tournament

The Partizan Tennis Club and Serbian Tennis Association will organize a WTA event in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2012. Prize money will be $220,000. The exact date of the tournament is still under consideration, but it will take place just before the French Open or US Open.

Participation of Serbian tennis stars Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Bojana Jovanovski is expected, as well as of former Serbian representative, now an Australian national, Jelena Dokic, who has reconciled with her family, primarily with her father Damir who lives in Serbia. (source: Blic)

  1. Right before the US Open seems pretty stupid as the US Open series is taking place then. The best slot will be to combine the ATP Belgrade tournament with the WTA in May. This will attract more guests and players. If the other option is before the US open, then maybe right after Wimbledon, but that might not be as popular as that is the time players rest and start training for the hard court season. Another good time would be to have the WTA tournament after the US Open maybe in the same week as Linz in the Belgrade Arena??? I’m hopeful something comes out of it, but doubt anything will. This might just end up like the situation in 2008 when Ana Ivanovic wanted to bring a WTA tournament to Belgrade but it never really worked out!

  2. Marija, if you visit the tournament, could you bring me autographs or send me phoos if you get some?

All in all I think it’s a good idea to make a tournament in Serbia. There are many stars from Serbia. That’s why they should have an own tournament.

  3. Bb, you really think it will not be realized? Cool idea to combine it with the ATP tournament, if Novak permits. 😉

Patricia, as for autographs, I already have some that reader John sent me. I will organize another competition and give them to my readers.

If I take some nice shots at the tournament, I will surely share them.
