Saturday highlights from the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

While most of Stuttgart’s main draw players are still busy around the world playing Fed-Cup, Saturday at Germany’s most prestigious WTA tournament had no shortage of Qualifying action.

Like in Paris & Dubai earlier this year, Women’s Tennis Blog is live on site and will be covering the tournament all week with all the latest photos straight from the heart of the Porsche Arena.

A quality field of qualifiers took to the courts today as spectators enjoyed the first day of the popular tournament, coming in to cheer on the many German players that faced off with some promising international talents.

Five German qualifiers pulled through, led by Annika Beck who survived a lengthy 3-set battle with fellow German Kristina Barrois.

Two prominent members of Germany’s Porsche Talent Team failed to advance to the next round though. Dinah Pfizenmaier lost her match to Diana Marcinkevica while Ajla Tomljanovic swept past Carina Witthöft in two easy sets.

While the qualifiers were battling for their spot in the main draw, two big-name players used the empty Porsche Arena to practice away from the public.

Both birthday girl Maria Sharapova and local favorite Sabine Lisicki took to the court, taking advantage of plenty of preparation time for the upcoming week away from Fed Cup duty.

Qualifying will continue tomorrow before the main draw action gets underway starting Monday as the Fed Cup players are expected to arrive in Stuttgart tomorrow evening.

Keep checking back for more coverage from Stuttgart all week!
