Thursday at the 2014 Topshelf Open was all about quarterfinal action as the semifinals for the Dutch tournament are now set.

The first player to make her way into the semis was Zheng Jie, the Chinese player handed Elina Svitolina a disappointing loss, as the Ukrainian failed to score a single game in the second set.

Following the 30 year-old into the round of the final four is Klara Koukalova, thanks to a straight-set win over Yaroslava Shvedova. While the Czech’s victory was hardly a surprise, the fans on center court were in for yet another upset victory this week:

In what has been a week of surprise losses by seeded players, Garbine Muguruza added another chapter by losing her match to American Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets.

The Spanish-American matchup was interrupted by a lengthy rain delay late in the first set, throwing Muguruza off her game as Vandeweghe comprehensively took control of the match once play resumed more than an hour later.

Annika Beck, who made the quraterfinals due to Simona Halep’s retirement yesterday, was not able to take advantage of what she had been handed, as Magdalena Rybarikova had no problems getting past Beck in straight sets.

The Slovakian backed up her hard-fought win against Andrea Petkovic with another commanding performance, leaving the German youngster no chance to reach her first ever semifinal on grass.

While Beck is already on her way to Wimbledon, four players will continue their quest for the 2014 Topshelf Open title tomorrow, as Zheng Jie will be playing Magdalena Rybarikova, while Coco Vandeweghe will face Klara Koukalova at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on Friday.
