Recent period has been extremely successful for Sania Mirza, as the famous Indian teamed up with legendary Martina Hingis in early March and has since won four women’s doubles titles, including at Wimbledon, and climbed to No.1 in doubles rankings, becoming the first Indian woman to achieve that feat. The milestone was added to Mirza’s big accomplishment from 2007, when she rose to No.27 in singles, the highest singles ranking for an Indian woman. All this makes me really glad to feature Mirza in Women’s Tennis Blog’s Little Tennis Stars series.
Mirza, born in 1986, started playing tennis at the age of six, joined the pro circuit eleven years later and after two years won her first and only WTA singles title in her home Hyderabad. Besides that one winner’s trophy in singles, Mirza has won a total of 30 doubles titles (27 in women’s doubles and three in mixed), out of which four came at Grand Slams (one at each Grand Slam!).
And here’s a lovely childhood photo Mirza recently shared on Twitter, saying: “Always been a Mumma’s girl.” Her mother, Naseema, worked in printing business.
In 2013, Mirza opened the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy in the picturesque setting at Murtuzaguda, suburban Hyderabad.
