Today is the 22nd birthday of Spanish tennis rising star Garbine Muguruza, and she has much to celebrate! On this day she celebrates her tennis journey, from playing with her brothers at age three, to joining the Sergi Bruguera tennis academy at age eight, to upsetting Serena Williams at Roland Garros 2014, and, most recently, to claiming her highest WTA ranking this week at number five.
This is a perfect opportunity to add Muguruza to our Little Tennis Stars series, and notice that little Garbine looks practically the same as the teenage Garbi that played on the top team at the Bruguera academy!
Now, almost three years down the road, 22-year-old Garbi is taking the women’s tennis world by storm. So far in 2015, she was the runner-up to Serena Williams at Wimbledon, the runner-up to Venus Williams at the Wuhan Open (a match in which she retired due to a left ankle injury), and became just the third Spanish player in history to crack the Top 5. With just one more win at the China Open this week, she would clinch a spot at the WTA Finals.
Along with her recent success, today is a day to commend the Spaniard on the fun-loving energy and passion she brings to the game. From acting goofy with teammates (pictured above with doubles partner Carla Suarez Navarro) to sharing her fashion with fans, she is entertaining both on and off the court! Happy Birthday, Garbine, and congrats on the journey thus far!
