Tuesday at the 2017 Western & Southern Open saw a mix of first-round and second-round play, with just as mixed results when it comes to top players.
Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza are off to a good start, as the Romanian second seed moved into the third round with a 6-4 6-1 victory over American Taylor Townsend, while the fourth-seeded Spaniard got her Cincinnati campaign underway with a 6-2 6-0 second-round win over Beatriz Haddad-Maia.
Things went much less smooth for newlywed Agnieszka Radwanska, as the Polish No.1 lost her first-round match to Germany’s Julia Goerges 6-4 6-4. Also out in round one is French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, having falling in round one to Serbian Aleksandra Krunic, who has now eliminated two Grand Slam champions already at the start of Cincinnati, following her victory over Francesca Schiavone in qualifying.
