Exotic beaches take a back seat this WTA off-season: Muguruza climbs Kilimanjaro, Sharapova meets African wildlife

Garbine Muguruza’s crazy Kilimanjaro climb inspired me to write this post. WTA players typically choose luxury beach vacations for the off-season, but there are those who prefer to keep themselves active, or even extremely active. Let’s see what women’s tennis stars are doing this November.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza put on her Adidas gear and started a six-day expedition to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

It seems that the 2019 tennis season wasn’t hard enough for the Spaniard, as she chose to use her free time to cross waterfalls, rivers, icy rivers, caves, do-not-look-down cliffs and endure frozen nights.

On the final day, Muguruza hiked for 22 days straight and after reaching the top of Africa at 5895 m in Tanzania, the 26-year-old commented: “Special thank you to my guide for keeping me awake when I collapsed at the glacier.”

When the thrilling hike was over, Muguruza met the Masai Tribe in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, then visited the Serengeti National Park, and eventually traveled to Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort for a relaxed vacation.

Maria Sharapova and her boyfriend Alexander Gilkes also enjoyed wild Africa this November — Vumpura Plains in Botswana and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The Russian shared a lot of photos and videos on Instagram and this quote sums up her impressions: “Why didn’t someone tell me I had to do a safari sooner?!”

Elise Mertens explored Iceland.

The Belgian world No.17 and her boyfriend Robbe Ceyssens went from off-side roads, difficult rides, high climbs, early mornings and late evenings to see nature at its best.

Fifth-ranked Bianca Andreescu traveled around Europe, visiting Paris, Milan, and the Swiss Alps.

Angelique Kerber was in Sri Lanka, on a “digital detox”, as she said.

Now let’s move on to typical off-season bikini shots.

Serena Williams was at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi.

Donna Vekic says: “I’ll be here if you need me.”

Karolina Pliskova at undisclosed beach location.

Caroline Wozniacki attended Nicole Gibbs’ wedding in Mexico and a few days later got into Baywatch mood.

What do you say, whose vacation is the best?

  1. Claire, I can agree with Iceland! 🙂 As for Garbi, I don’t know why she would do that to herself lol. But I genuinely admire her feat.
