Kim Clijsters has arrived in Monterrey to debut at the Abierto GNP Seguros for the second tournament of her comeback after a seven-year absence and the Hall of Famer was spotted on the court with fellow tennis mom Victoria Azarenka, who will play her first event since last year’s US Open.
It was Azarenka who advised Clijsters to enter the Monterrey Open, saying that it was a great tournament to come and play at, and the Belgian is glad to have come and experienced the friendliness of people.
After losing her first comeback match to Garbine Muguruza in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Clijsters, still unranked and again as a wildcard, will play another Top 20 opponent in her Monterrey opener as she faces second seed Johanna Konta of Great Britain.
When it comes to Azarenka, the Belarusian has been away from the pro circuit for half a year, mainly due to the custody battle around her son Leo. While not being able to travel to play on tour, Azarenka enrolled into the Harvard Business Program – Crossover into Business.
Azarenka and Clijsters are in the same half of the draw in Monterrey and both will play their openers on Tuesday. Azarenka is seeded seventh at the event and will play Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia in her first match this year.
Vika and Kim attended the Monterrey players’ party in the Parque Fundidora.
Elina Svitolina is top seed at the Abierto GNP Seguros. Grand Slam champions Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens are also competing in Mexico this week.
