Tuesday’s Rome recap + singles and doubles first-round photos

Jimmie48 is delivering another wonderful set of photos from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. My favorites in today’s gallery are doubles photos, especially the black-and-white ones of Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska. Let’s do a little recap of Tuesday’s first-round matches and then enjoy the photos in the end.

The biggest upset today was pulled off by Katerina Siniakova, as the Czech recorded her first-ever victory against three-time major champion Angelique Kerber in just 69 minutes, 6-3 6-1.

Ninth seed Garbine Muguruza triumphed in an encounter of two Grand Slam winners, beating Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-3, the player who had defeated her in their sole meeting on clay last year at Roland Garros.

After defeating Ons Jabeur last month at Lexington, Coco Gauff repeated the feat in Rome, battling back from a 4-2 deficit in the opening set to advance to the second round with a 6-4 6-3 victory. The 16-year-old Gauff, currently ranked 53rd, is already a household name in the tennis world, so it’s hard to acknowledge that the American was playing her first tour-level main draw match on clay.

Seed No.14 Anett Kontaveit defeated Caroline Garcia 6-3 7-6(1). The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is the tournament where the Estonian recorded her sole win over a reigning No.1, in 2017 against Kerber.

Our Jimmie48 made it to all the above-mentioned matches, as well as to seed No.12 Marketa Vondrousova‘s 6-1 4-6 6-4 win over qualifier Misaki Doi, qualifier Arantxa Rus‘ upset of Iga Swiatek 7-6(5) 6-3, and Yulia Putintseva‘s 6-2 6-4 victory over Rebecca Peterson.

We also have wonderful photos of Simona Halep‘s and Monica Niculescu‘s dominant doubles triumph over Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska, 6-0 6-1. My favorites are the pre-match photos of the Ukrainian doubles team! Moreover, Sofia Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands were wearing masks after their doubles match, but we could still see notice their good mood and wide smiles, even though they lost to Anna-Lena Friedsam and Raluca Olaru in the first round.
