Retired tennis star Maria Sharapova earned a whopping $325 million from prize money, endorsements and appearances over the course of her WTA career, but what were the first things the Russian athlete-turned-entrepreneur bought at the start of her ascent from rags to riches?
Reacting to the recent passing of famed Italian jewelry designer Elsa Peretti, Sharapova shared a Vogue magazine article about the artist behind numerous Tiffany & Co. pieces, expressed sadness through emoticons and revealed:
With my first cash check from tournaments, I collected the pieces created by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany.
When Sharapova’s career took off, Tiffany & Co. was added to a long list of her sponsors. A number of her iconic Grand Slam looks incorporated luxury earrings designed by Elsa Peretti.
Describing a pair of the 2011 French Open diamond earrings from Tiffany for Maria Sharapova collection, the five-time major champion said:
These earrings sparkle with every movement and they are so lightweight which makes them perfect to wear on the court.
