Australian WTA player Ajla Tomljanovic is currently probably consoling her boyfriend Matteo Berrettini for losing the Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic, as he was trying to become the first Italian to win the grass-court Grand Slam.

The couple started dating some two years ago, when Ajla was spotted cheering for Matteo during the US Open and the Vienna Open. At the time, Matteo shared a photo of them walking around the Austrian capital and shopping.

Talking about the things that drew them closer together, Matteo singled out two loves:

We are two quiet people, we share two passions: movies and dogs.

When it comes to tennis, the 25-year-old Matteo admits that he feels less stressed playing tense matches than watching his girlfriend’s tough battles. When he is in the stands supporting the Croatian-born beauty, his “hands become very sweaty.” At this year’s Wimbledon, Ajla lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty.

During the lockdown, Matteo used the free time to teach Ajla to cook some of her favorite dishes, including pasta with garlic and chili. The pandemic gave them an opportunity to spend a lot of time together, as before their relationship was more long-distance because of their busy schedules.

It was nice to spend a lot of time with Ajla. We were not used to this situation, because we met only occasionally. It was not always easy, but it was very positive. We have trained together. We have a different mentality. I am more relaxed.

Ahead of the 2021 Australian Open, they were forced to be apart, even though they were in the same hotel:

The only complicated thing about this quarantine is that Ajla Tomljanovic, my girlfriend, is six floors below me, but despite the fact that we both took the tests and tested negative, we are not allowed to see each other.
