The world No.8 Kontaveit has won four WTA titles since she started working with coach Dmitry Tursunov at the Western & Southern Open in August. The super confident 25-year-old has now won 28 of her last 30 matches. Talking to the press after the victory, Kontaveit attributes her extraordinary recent results to feeling good on court and having a good time: “I do feel like I can take on everyone.” The WTA Finals debutante also mentioned that Tursunov has brought good new energy to the team.

After beating Barbora Krejcikova in Group Teotihuacan on Wednesday, on Friday Kontaveit defeated Pliskova for the first time in their four meetings. The Czech still has a chance to advance to the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.

Later on Friday, Garbine Muguruza rallied to beat Barbora Krejcikova 2-6 6-3 6-4 and win her first match during the round-robin stage in Group Teotihuacan. The player who will join Kontaveit as the second semifinalist from this group will be known after the final round-robin matches on Sunday.

  1. Marija, you explain all the mathematical computations to figure out who advances between Plikova, Muguruza, and Krajcikova, after Sunday’s matches. The various scenarios make my head explode!!😲🤣

  2. Jim, I am not superior in maths. I barely understand the ranking system. But we’ll see how it goes, I’ll do my best 🙂
