Top-ranked Ashleigh Barty, defending champion Naomi Osaka and red hot Paula Badosa all comfortably won their second-round matches in Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.

Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty needed just 52 minutes to brush aside Italian qualifier Lucia Bronzetti 6-1 6-1. The world No.142 Bronzetti, who started last season just inside the Top 400, was one of nine Grand Slam debutantes in the draw.

Home favorite Barty has not dropped a game on her serve at the 2022 Australian Open so far and her season has started with a 6-0 win loss record, as she won the Adelaide International title last week. The 25-year-old is spending her 111th and 112th weeks as world No.1 this fortnight.

In the third round, Barty will face Italian 30th seed Camila Giorgi.

Naomi Osaka, who will have a potential fourth-round clash with Barty, advanced with a 6-0 6-4 victory over American world No.54 Madison Brengle. After racing through the first set in 20 minutes, Osaka faced ten break points in the second set and found herself a break down at 3-4. The Japanese then won three straight games and quickly progressed in 65 minutes.

American Amanda Anisimova, who eliminated Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic and is yet to lose a match this season, awaits Osaka in the third round.

World No.6 Paula Badosa had never before won back-to-back matches in Australia, while now she’s on a seven-match unbeaten streak this season Down Under. After claiming her third WTA singles title at the Sydney Tennis Classic last week, Badosa is now through to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open with a comfortable 6-0 6-3 win over Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan. The Spaniard’s next opponent will be Marta Kostyuk.
