Fifth seed Ons Jabeur and top seed Iga Swiatek are the last two women standing at the 2022 US Open.
Ons Jabeur reached her second straight Grand Slam final with a relatively easy 6-1 6-3 victory over Caroline Garcia in the first women’s semifinal contested in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night. The world number five Jabeur didn’t give her nervous opponent a chance to even get into the match. The Tunisian converted 4/4 break points and never had her serve endangered en route to a swift victory in 66 minutes.
“Feels more real, to be honest with you, just to be in the final again. At Wimbledon, I was kind of just living the dream, and I couldn’t believe it,” Jabeur said after becoming the first African woman to reach the US Open final in the Open Era. “Now just, I hope, I’m getting used to it. … Now maybe I know what to do.”
Two-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek moved into her first US Open final with a 3-6 6-1 6-4 victory over sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka. The world number one Swiatek fought back from 4-2 down in the deciding set, winning the last four games and 16 of the last 20 points.
Swiatek and Jabeur are tied in their career meetings, 2-2. Swiatek won their last encounter, in this year’s Rome final, while Jabeur won their last match on hard-courts, at 2021 Cincinnati.
