Just three days after lifting the trophy on the grass of the Bad Homburg Open, third seed Jessica Pegula suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon, falling in straight sets to world No. 116 Elisabetta Cocciaretto. This is the American’s earliest Grand Slam defeat in five years!
The world No. 3 Pegula lost to Cocciaretto 6-2 6-3 in less than an hour. The American managed just five winners and committed 24 unforced errors. Cocciaretto never even faced a break point. This Day 2 upset is the biggest of the 2025 tournament so far across both the women’s and men’s singles draws.
Not only was Pegula riding high after winning the Bad Homburg Open, where she defeated former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the final, but she had also beaten Cocciaretto in their only prior meeting—at Wimbledon two years ago during her run to the quarterfinals.
