This week we got two new WTA titlists, who both went through qualifying to make the main draw and both had never before played a WTA final – after Tsvetana Pironkova crowned her amazing week with the Premier-level trophy in Sydney, world No.58 Garbine Muguruza won the Hobart International.
Spain’s Muguruza completed the feat without losing a set and she played a total of 15 sets with the qualifying. Most notably she upset second seed Kirsten Flipkens in the quarterfinals and now seventh seed Klara Zakopalova 6-4 6-0 in the final. Czech Zakopalova took out top seed Sam Stosur in the semis, but now her win-loss record in singles finals dropped to 2-11. However, she went on to win the doubles title at the event, partnered with Monica Niculescu. (photo: Jimmie48)
