Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has become the fourth Russian woman to win the Kremlin Cup title, joining Anastasia Myskina, Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Dementieva by ending the landmark week of Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the final.
The 30th-ranked Pavlyuchenkova raced to a 4-1 lead initially and even though Begu managed to approach her and take her serve several times, the first set went into the Russian’s hands. In the less unstable second set, Begu claimed a crucial break in the eleventh game at 5-5 and solidly held serve to take the match to the decider. In the third set it was all about the sixth-seeded favorite Pavlyuchenkova and she clinched the trophy 6-4 5-7 6-1.
It is the seventh WTA title for Pavlyuchenkova, which brought her $120,000 in prize money, while the world No. 61 Begu can leave Moscow satisfied, having played her first Premier-level final and having recorded two victories over Top 20 players at a single tournament for the first time.
