The final two players have kicked off their 2015 Toray Pan Pacific Open campaign as Ana Ivanovic & Karolina Pliskova completed their first matches inside Tokyo’s Ariake Coliseum on Thursday.
Following her first-round bye, Ivanovic got past Italy’s Camila Giorgi to make the quarterfinals. The 2014 Toray Pan Pacific Open champion will be joined there by Karolina Pliskova who punched her quarterfinal ticket against Japan’s Kurumi Nara.
The Pliskova–Nara match was briefly interrupted due to rain and the Coliseum’s retractable roof needed to be closed for the first time this week, effectively turning the remaining matches of the day into indoor affairs.
The different playing conditions couldn’t derail Agnieszka Radwanska, whose straight-set win over Elina Svitolina marks the seventh consecutive Tokyo quarterfinal appearance for the Polish #1.
Friday’s quarterfinals will offer some very exciting match-ups, including Caroline Wozniacki’s encounter with friend Angelique Kerber, the duel of the promising youngsters between Belinda Bencic & Garbine Muguruza, while Karolina Pliskova will play Agnieszka Radwanska. Hopefully, there will also be a fourth match, as Ana Ivanovic is scheduled to play Dominika Cibulkova. The Slovakian has been reported to be sick, though, causing her to drop out of her Thursday afternoon doubles match.
Whether it’ll be three or four quarterfinals, Women’s Tennis Blog will bring you all the latest action from Tokyo tomorrow!
