The second round of the 2015 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open commenced on Wednesday inside the Victoria Park Tennis Centre and half of the 32-player draw completed their second matches of the tournament.
The field of players on Wednesday was led by Sam Stosur & Jelena Jankovic, both of whom won their second rounders in dominant fashion. Stosur faced off with Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig, getting past the youngster in two quick sets, continuing her impressive run this week as the Australian is has to drop a single set in Hong Kong.
Fellow wildcard player Jelena Jankovic has had an equally impressive run so far, backing up her straight-set win over Ana Bogdan in the first round with another quick win against Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova. After having to concede the first set 0-6, Rodionova took a medical timeout that did little to swing the match her way as Jankovic comfortably closed out the second set.
Jankovic & Stosur are joined in the quarterfinals by Daria Gavrilova. After having her work cut out for her in a tough first round against Kato, Gavrilova’s second-round match was a much more clear-cut affair. Facing Spaniard Lara Arrubarrena, Gavrilova took firm control of her match after a close first-set tiebreak in her favor, punching her quarterfinal ticket in straight sets.
While three of the four victorious players managed to keep their time on court to a minimum, Heather Watson took the long way into the quarterfinals. Watson won the first set against Ya-Hsuan Lee 6-0 when the Taiwanese player suddenly caught fire in the second set, forcing a very close third-set decider as Watson prevailed.
Thursday will determine the other four players that will complete the tournament’s quarterfinals as Angelique Kerber & Venus Williams will be due to play their second matches in Hong Kong.
