Agnieszka Radwanska and Petra Kvitova emerged as winners of today’s semifinals in Singapore, defeating favorites Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sharapova who had advanced to the final four with a 3-0 record in the round-robin stage, while the Pole and the Czech were both 1-2, that’s one win to two losses!
In the first semifinal on Saturday, Radwanska managed to beat Muguruza for the first time in five tries this year and stayed speechless, as she wasted a 4-1 lead in the first-set tiebreak and in the third set allowed Muguruza to come back from 4-1 to 4-all before eventually making the deciding break in the 12th game of the set. Final score: 6-7(5) 6-3 7-5.
After Lucie Safarova resurrected Kvitova yesterday by beating Angelique Kerber in straight sets and giving her compatriot an unlikely passage into the semis, Kvitova used the opportunity to the fullest and summoned up her best skills to beat Sharapova 6-3 7-6(3).
Both Radwanska and Kvitova today ensured to surpass $20 million in career prize money when the tournament is over. When it comes to their head-to-head record, Kvitova leads 6-2, including a victory in their 2015 encounter, while it was Radwanska who won their meeting in Singapore last year.
At the started of this WTA finals. I felt that Agnieszka Radwanska had good chance taking the 2nd spot of her group. My confidence was severely shaken when she lost her 2 round robin matches. Now that is Sunday know what happen today. I am pleased and happy for her.
