The 2016 WTA Finals in Singapore have officially kicked off as the Singapore Indoor Stadium hosted the first day of round-robin play on Sunday.
Before things got all serious for four of the eight best players of the season, the day started on a lighter note as Agnieszka Radwanska, Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands participated in a fun-filled family day event with lots of laughs.
Afterwards, laughing time was over though, especially for Madison Keys. The 21-year-old is the youngest player in the field, playing her first ever WTA Finals, and her debut was not particularly successful as the very error-prone American fell to Simona Halep in two quick sets. This puts Keys under pressure in her next match, since she’ll be eliminated if she suffers another straight-set loss.
In the second Red Group match on Sunday, Angelique Kerber and Dominika Cibulkova faced off and, as many experts predicted, it was a thrilling and close match. The world #1 needed three sets to finally edge the WTA Finals debutante from Slovakia and both players provided plenty of exciting tennis in the process.
The 2016 WTA Finals in Singapore will continue tomorrow with White Group play: Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Svetlana Kuznetsova are set to commence their Singapore campaigns.
