I’m excited to tell you that Maria Sharapova and Monica Puig are set to play an exhibition match in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on December 15th and Women’s Tennis Blog’s photographer Jimmie48 will be there!
The Monica Puig Invitational, as the event is called, promises to be a stunning exho for several reasons:
- There’s hardly a name in the WTA world that attracts more spectators than Sharapova and everyone is excited to be a part of her comeback strategy (the Russian’s long-awaited return to the competitive courts will be in April 2017).
- Puerto Rico has no bigger sports star than Puig, who won the country’s first Olympic gold medal this summer in Rio de Janeiro, while yesterday in Doha the International Olympic Committee handed the 23-year-old the prestigious Association of National Olympic Committee Award for Best Female Athlete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
- The exho will be played in the 16,000-seat Coliseo de Puerto Rico, which is bigger than all WTA’s indoor venues.
Such an honor to win the award for Best Female Athlete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games! Thanks to my friends, family, ANOC, COPUR and my team! pic.twitter.com/Vuwf0QKF7D

BTW, I have to note how stunning Monica looked at the award ceremony! Lovely long highlighted wavy hair and beautiful burgundy dress!

Well, I have to admit that I haven’t been a fan of Puig but she did a fantastic performance at the OG in Rio. Of course, an exhibition match is not important but just GO FOR IT girl, you are the one who deserves it.
I’m just glad Sharapova is back in the court after that silly mistake. Lesson learned?
A decade of using a drug for performance enhancement is hardly a silly mistake.
It may be a silly mistake, or maybe it is not….. in the end, she will return in less than 180 days so start counting your days, cause whether we like it or not, we will see her again… so excited !
Thanks, Sabey, for expressing my exact thoughts. No, not excited at all but still disappointed.
