After retiring from Sunday’s first-round match against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur at the China Open with a back injury, world No.1 Simona Halep took to Twitter on Tuesday to tell her followers that an MRI scan revealed a disk hernia.
“It’s really tough when you have back injury because you cannot bend, you cannot react at the balls,” Halep explained after her retirement against Jabeur. The injury also troubled the Romanian last week at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, where she lost but completed her opening match against Dominika Cibulkova.
The 27-year-old will discuss the injury with her doctors in the coming days and although she hopes that a return will come soon, her participation at the WTA Finals in Singapore is in serious doubt now. The season-ending finale, for which she qualified first this year, starts on October 21st.
