Top seed Ashleigh Barty is through to her first Wimbledon final with a 6-3 7-6(3) victory over 2018 champion Angelique Kerber.
One break was enough for Barty to take the opening set in commanding fashion. The Australian hit 17 winners, nine more than her opponent, while they both made seven unforced errors in that set.
The 25th-seeded Kerber went up a break at the start of the second set and held on to it for a 4-1 lead. Just as it seemed that we were cruising to the third set, Barty starting turning the tables. While serving for the set at 5-3, Kerber switched off and dropped serve without winning a single point. Barty forced a tiebreak and confidently raced through it.
Barty’s opponent in the final will be eighth seed Karolina Pliskova, who defeated second seed Aryna Sabalenka 5-7 6-4 6-4.
