Last year’s finalist Jasmine Paolini cruised into the third round of Roland Garros with a 6-3 6-3 triumph over Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, continuing her impressive form on clay. This is her eighth consecutive win, building on the momentum from her recent WTA 1000 title in Rome.
Back on the same court where she faced Iga Swiatek in last year’s final, Paolini was quick to assert control, capitalizing on a series of errors from Tomljanovic to break early for a 3-1 lead. She never looked back, calmly serving out the first set.
The second set began with Paolini racing ahead to 3-0, though Tomljanovic mounted a brief challenge by breaking back and narrowing the score to 3-2. Still, the Italian fourth seed stayed focused and finished the match with another break to seal the win.
Next up for Paolini is a clash with either Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva or Russia’s Anastasia Potapova.
Earlier on Wednesday, eighth seed Zheng Qinwen, the reigning Olympic singles champion, advanced to the third round with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, one of nine players making their Grand Slam debut in the main draw.
