The drama is over, or this is just the beginning. The WTA has reinstated Stefano Vukov, controversial coach of world No. 10 Elena Rybakina, after a suspension linked to a potential breach of its code of conduct.
Vukov was provisionally suspended in January while the WTA investigated the matter. In February, the organization confirmed the investigation was complete and that the suspension would continue, without specifying its duration.
The WTA has now announced that Vukov is once again eligible to receive credentials granting him access to player areas and practice courts at tour events. During the past months, Vukov continued to work with Rybakina, but strict restrictions meant they could not meet at official tournament sites. He was barred from entering locker rooms, sitting courtside in her player box, or accessing other credentialed areas.
“The WTA is fully committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all athletes and other participants, as set out in our WTA Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Code,” the tour said in a statement. “Any sanctions issued following a breach of these safeguarding rules are carefully considered and are subject to appeal before an independent tribunal. While case details remain confidential, we can confirm that Mr. Vukov is eligible to receive credentials at WTA events.”
Vukov’s role with Rybakina has drawn attention in recent years. The Kazakhstani star announced ahead of last year’s US Open that he would no longer be part of her team, only to later confirm before the Australian Open that he was returning as her coach. The 2022 Wimbledon champion has consistently maintained that he never mistreated her during their professional relationship.
Rybakina recently reached the semifinals of the Omnium Banque Nationale in Montreal, where she was defeated by Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, who went on to win the tournament. (via: ESPN)
