Flavia Pennetta pulled off a 7-6(5) 6-4 victory over Agnieszka Radwanska in her must-win match in the Red Group of the WTA Finals, showing the performance that put the US Open champion’s trophy into her hands.
Early in the match the fifth-seeded Radwanska had the upper hand, going 3-1 and then again 5-3 up, but the seventh-seeded Pennetta answered by taking matters into her own hands, stayed strong all the way to the tiebreak and won it as well. The second set was more straightforward in terms of the scoreline, as one and only break, in the seventh game, decided the victor.
In her opening match of the tournament, Pennetta lost to top-seeded Simona Halep, while her next encounter will be with third seed Maria Sharapova. On the other hand, if Halep beats Sharapova later today, Radwanska will be eliminated from semifinal contention.
