Indian Wells update: WTA stars talk to media as rain rolls into desert and disrupts play

As the first round of the WTA action got off to a rocky start with rain delays Wednesday in Indian Wells, top seeds enjoyed a fully packed media day and some abbreviated practices.

World number one, the Polish Iga Swiatek was enjoying a slow start. The 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion took two days off and described herself as “fresh and ready to compete.” Before coming to Indian Wells, she had a mini vacation in Malibu to go shopping and check out the beach. The top seed spent another day relaxing by the pool before getting back onto the court.

The 22-year-old pointed out a key way that this California tournament is different from other 1000-level events on the calendar: “Here you have all these sponsors, shoes, all these obligations we have to fulfill.” Famous for its scenic backdrops and a plethora of country clubs with rentable tennis courts, sponsors choose the preceding week to film commercials and shoot photos that will be used for the rest of the season. This creates a significant distraction that sought-after players do not otherwise have outside of majors.

Coco Gauff had a very different kind of photoshoot at her home in Florida recently. The 19-year-old American will grace the cover of Vogue in April. In her humble nature, the third seed immediately linked the commercial benefits to the sport, not just herself. Gauff said, “I think it’s really important to bring more fans to the sport.” The young player added, “It’s one thing I was actually talking about the other day with Serena, just how much of a presence she had off-court that matched her presence on the court. I think that brought more fans into tennis and paved the pathway for people like me to be on the cover.”

Making the Vogue photoshoot stand out more, the spread includes a family portrait. Coco’s two younger brothers proudly stand next to her in their football and baseball uniforms. In the words of the eldest daughter and only tennis player in the bunch: “That’s just what we are, we’re a sports family so it’s really special.”

Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, was in a characteristically good mood speaking with press, still riding the high of her second Australian Open title. Reflecting on the major achievement, the Belarusian said, “I don’t like to focus on goals that I was able to achieve, I like to move on and start getting ready for the next one.” The next goal is capturing the BNP Paribas Open title that narrowly slid through her fingers in 2023, when Elena Rybakina defeated her 7-6 6-4 in the final.

Sabalenka was enjoying a late afternoon practice when the weather took an abrupt turn. Gusty winds kicked up dust and sand. Maria Sakkari, practicing with new coach David Witt, repeatedly gestured to her eyes as though to suggest problems with all the debris being kicked up. When rain started shortly after, Sakkari, Swiatek, and Sabalenka, all ended their practices prematurely to get inside the stadium again. The night session, starting with Venus Williams facing qualifier Nao Hibino, was delayed over two hours, and only started up again in fits and spurts. Three hours after the scheduled start, only two games had been played over two short intervals of play. At 9 p.m., the tournament announced play would resume Thursday.

The full first round will be played out Thursday. The second round, featuring the seeded players, kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. Los Angeles time.

4 women’s tennis players nominated for 25th Laureus World Sports Awards

Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondrousova, and Diede de Groot are women’s tennis players nominated in four different categories of the total seven featured in the 25th Laureus World Sports Awards.

Coco Gauff

Four-time major champion Iga Swiatek of Poland is nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, alongside Aitana Bonmati (football, Spain), Shericka Jackson (athletics, Jamaica), Faith Kipyegon (athletics, Kenya), Sha’Carri Richardson (athletics, USA), and Mikaela Shiffrin (skiing, USA).

Coco Gauff of the USA, the reigning US Open champion, earned her first Laureus nomination for Breakthrough of the Year. Her competition in the category are Jude Bellingham (football, UK), Linda Caicedo (football, Colombia), Qin Haiyang (swimming, China), Josh Kerr (athletics, UK), and Salma Paralluelo (football, Spain).

Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic secured a spot on the Laureus Comeback of the Year ballot by triumphing at Wimbledon last summer, a remarkable achievement following her recovery from wrist surgery in 2022. Her victory made her the first unseeded woman to claim the title at the All England Club in the Open Era. Other athletes nominated in this category are Simone Biles (gymnastics, USA), Katarina Johnson-Thompson (athletics, UK), Siya Kolisi (rugby, South Africa), Sebastien Haller (football, Ivory Coast), and Jamal Murray (basketball, Canada).

Diede de Groot representing the Netherlands is nominated for the third time for Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability.

When it comes to men’s tennis, only Novak Djokovic of Serbia made the list, nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, alongside other five male athletes from football, motor racing, and athletics. The ATP legend is in pursuit of his fifth honor.

Tennis has a storied history of success at the Laureus World Sports Awards over the past two decades. Roger Federer stands out as the most decorated recipient, having clinched six awards in total, including five for Sportsman of the Year and one for Comeback of the Year. Similarly, Serena Williams has been a dominant force, securing five awards, with four for Sportswoman of the Year and one for Comeback of the Year.

The awards ceremony will take place in Madrid on April 22. The exact venue is one of the city’s most iconic buildings, the Palacio de Cibeles, a remarkable structure designed by the prolific architect partnership of Antonio Palacios and Joaquin Otamendi.

7 best outfits at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships features a 64-player field, offering a fantastic display of tennis outfits this week in the United Arab Emirates. I’ve curated a list of my favorite looks from the WTA 1000 tournament and would love to hear your thoughts. While I’ve ranked them, each outfit stands out for its unique style and deserves recognition. Let me know if you agree with my choices or if you think another look should be added to the list.

7. Magdalena Frech, Bidi Badu

Magdalena Frech in Bidi Badu dress
Magdalena Frech of Poland brought a refreshing style to the courts with her 2-in-1 Wild Arts Dress by Bidi Badu. The item, adorned with an artistic print in vibrant red and pink tones, features a racerback design and a pleated bottom section.

Magdalena Frech Mizuno shoes

The world No.53 perfectly matched her elegant red manicure and the Mizuno Wave Enforce Tour tennis shoes.

6. Dayana Yastremska, Yonex

Dayana Yastremska in Yonex

The Yonex collection unveiled at the 2024 Australian Open stands out as one of the brand’s best in recent years, in my view. Dayana Yastremska‘s outfit, in particular, caught my eye. She sported the Melbourne Tank, featuring print trim accents, paired with the Melbourne Print Skirt in a wavy print that blends shades of blue accented by yellow.

Perfectly matched with the Ukrainian’s apparel are her yellow Yonex PC Fusion Rev 5 kicks.

5. Peyton Stearns, Wilson

Peyton Stearns in Wilson outfit at Dubai

Wilson‘s solid-colored outfits consistently grab attention, thanks to their bold hues and sexy silhouettes. American tennis player Peyton Stearns exemplified this trend, looking stunning in a vibrant red crop top paired with a high-waisted pleated skirt. The bold color and flattering cut accentuated Stearns’ athletic physique, making for a striking on-court appearance.

When it comes to footwear, Stearns wears the New Balance CT Rally.

4. Zheng Qinwen, Nike

Zheng Qinwen at the Dubai tournament

Zheng Qinwen looks stylish in her soft yellow Nike separates from the Melbourne collection. The Nike Melbourne Slam Tank features a racerback design with slightly textured material and a cutout on the back. Paired with the Nike Spring Advantage Mini Pleat Skirt, which boasts an asymmetrical pleated panel, Zheng’s ensemble not only looks great but also serves a functional purpose by minimizing fly-ups during play, ensuring she remains focused and free from distractions on the court.

The Chinese player wears the Nike Vapor Pro 2 tennis shoe, in the colorway from this year’s Melbourne footwear collection.

3. Elina Svitolina, Adidas

Elina Svitolina in Adidas at Dubai

Adidas recently unveiled a black-and-white Premium collection that captivates with its simplicity and discreet details. This collection has garnered so much love that I dedicated a separate article to showcase how Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari, Daria Kasatkina, and Karolina Pliskova all look stunning in it at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Elina Svitolina's adidas Avacourt 2 tennis shoes
Svitolina exudes grace in the Adidas Core Premium Dress. This design not only enhances her silhouette with its hourglass color-blocking but also ensures optimal comfort through its mesh fabric panels. An interesting detail in this collection is the laser-cut Adidas logo adorning each garment. To complete her look, the Ukrainian pairs the dress with the Adidas Avacourt 2 tennis shoes, personalized with Ukrainian flag and the logo of the Svitolina Foundation.

2. Donna Vekic, Uomo Sport

Donna Vekic

Donna Vekic‘s natural beauty shines through in everything she wears, but this week in Dubai, she exudes a particularly classy charm. She sported a blue short-sleeved top (Le Club Crew Milos) tucked into a flirty skirt with pleats in the back (Luxe Skort White) from her own line within Uomo Sport. Her confidence translated onto the court, where she made a statement by eliminating reigning Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in the second round. Donna Vekic's On tennis shoes in Dubai

Complementing her ensemble, the Croatian opted for On tennis shoes, completing a stylish and functional look for her matches.

1. Coco Gauff, New Balance

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff continues to make waves not just on the tennis court but also in women’s tennis fashion with New Balance. The soon-to-be-twenty-year-old, who made TIME’s 2024 Women of the Year list, showcased her style in an eye-catching red New Balance Spring Tournament Tank, a somewhat shorter design with contrast binding on the neck. The American paired it with a matching skirt featuring front hem vents.

coco cg1 tennis shoes australian open

Completing her ensemble, Coco wore her signature CG1 shoes, this time in the NB navy, true red, and ginger lemon colorway. Her fashion-forward choices reflect her growing influence both on and off the court, solidifying her status as a trendsetter in the world of tennis fashion.

I’ve highlighted some of the top women’s tennis fashion moments from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you agree with my picks, or would you add someone else to the list? Fashion is subjective, and the beauty of tennis fashion lies in its diversity and individuality.

Coco Gauff makes TIME’s 2024 Women of the Year list

Nineteen-year-old Coco Gauff has been named to TIME’s annual Women of the Year list, a prestigious honor recognizing exceptional leaders striving for a more equitable world. The reigning US Open champion is not only the youngest woman on this esteemed list but also the only athlete, a testament to her impactful activism and advocacy.

Coco Gauff

Born into a family with a strong history of activism, Gauff’s perspective has been shaped by her grandmother, who was the first Black student at her high school in Delray Beach, Florida, back in 1961. “My goal is to tell my grandkids that I was on the right side of history,” the young tennis player boldly points out.

Following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, Gauff took to social media to express her outrage and participated in a protest, using her platform to amplify the voices of those fighting against injustice. Her commitment to activism is deeply personal, as she stated, “It was to the point where I was crying about it, because I felt like I had to say something.” Addressing the crowd in Delray Beach, she said: “If you are choosing silence, you’re choosing the side of the oppressor.”

The young athlete emphasizes that while she has her own thoughts and opinions, her status as a prominent public figure adds an additional responsibility to leverage her fame for positive purposes. In a recent interview with Egyptian journalist Reem Abulleil, Gauff openly addressed the conflict between Israel and Palestine, expressing her solidarity with the suffering civilians:

“I feel like it would be ignorant to say I’m not aware, I’m very aware of everything that’s going on in Gaza. For me, I always say I pray for peace in the region. And I really don’t like what’s going on. For me, it’s sometimes troubling to live the life I live, in knowing that so many kids and innocent people are dying on both ends, but especially in what’s going on in Gaza and the occupation that’s happening…

“In my position, I know there’s not much I can do other than raise awareness and donate. So that’s what I encourage everyone to do and just pray for peace and demand peace and demand that this stops happening.”

“I feel like it’s very ignorant to say you’re not aware because it is everywhere, you see it on the news and I think it’s important for us as privileged civilians to do our research and just continuing to demand our leaders to make change and I will never not advocate for that. And I do advocate for peace and I advocate for the thousands, I think it’s almost like I said millions at this point, of kids and innocent people being killed for a conflict that I feel like shouldn’t be happening.”

For Gauff, activism is a natural extension of her beliefs and upbringing. She recalls her father telling her, “You can change the world with your racquet,” a mantra that has stuck with her throughout her career. Whether on or off the court, Gauff remains dedicated to using her platform to advocate for equality and justice.

Talking to reporters at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Gauff reflected on her upbringing and the influence of tennis legends like Billie Jean King, Venus Williams, and Althea Gibson, saying that women’s tennis is very successful in advocating for equality and justice.

Gauff’s inclusion in the Women of the Year list alongside other notable activists, scientists, and artists is a testament to her impact and influence. She will attend a celebratory gala in Los Angeles next month before competing at the BNP Paribas Open. (via WTA, photo: Jimmie48)

Coco Gauff hints at a happy love life: “My boyfriend came in town”

Coco Gauff remains candid about her boyfriend even though she doesn’t refrain from mentioning him from time to time. This week at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, the American teenager described how she spent her days after the Australian Open, including moments enjoyed with her partner.

Coco Gauff at the 2024 Qatar TotalEnergies Open

After starting the 2024 season on a high by defending the ASB Classic title in Auckland, Gauff proceeded to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open, where she lost to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Talking to the media this week in Doha, Gauff revealed that the first night after losing the Melbourne semifinal that came down to a couple of points she was constantly replaying moments from the match in her mind. Then the Florida native also mentioned that upon returning home, she took a few days off to unwind and spent quality time with her boyfriend:

And then after that, I flew home and then what did I do? Oh, I took off like four days; four-five days. My boyfriend came in town so I hung out with him.

We don’t know anything about the lucky guy, except for the fact that they have been together for quite some time now and that he helped her calm down ahead of her second Grand Slam final. Following the epic triumph at the 2023 US Open, the WTA sensation opened up about a game-changing late-night phone call that helped her ditch the overthinking and ace her focus:

I just called my boyfriend, and I told him let’s talk until it’s time to go to sleep so we spoke until 1:00 a.m. and then I went to sleep.

Gauff’s run at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open ended early as the second seed suffered a surprising 6-2 6-4 defeat to Katerina Siniakova in her opening match. (source: Sportskeeda)

Sabalenka survives Gauff, returns to Aussie Open final

In a rematch of the most recent US Open final, Aryna Sabalenka avenged the loss with a 7-6(2) 6-4 victory over Coco Gauff in a spectacular semifinal showdown at Rod Laver Arena which put the Belarusian just one win away from another Australian Open triumph.

Aryna Sabalenka

Wearing the red Nike Spring Slam Dress, Sabalenka took early control with a commanding 5-2 lead, capitalizing on Gauff’s struggle with five double faults in her initial three service games. Staying cool under pressure, Gauff initiated a remarkable comeback and managed to level at 5-5, which included saving a set point and hitting the fastest serve at the tournament with the speed of 201 km/h.

As we started seeing despair in Sabalenka’s eyes, the fourth-seeded Gauff sustained her momentum, breaking the Belarusian to secure her fourth consecutive game. Yet, the conclusion of the set proved to be a formidable challenge for Gauff. Sabalenka regained her composure and managed to break Gauff’s serve as she attempted to close out the set. This shift in momentum allowed Sabalenka to assert dominance in the subsequent tiebreak.

After Sabalenka wasted two break points in the opening game of the second set, one with a very bad volley, the next four games were all love holds, two on each side. Players continued to win their service games until 4-4, when Sabalenka finally converted her fifth break point. In the following game, Gauff saved one match point, but the second seed earned her second chance with an ace and finished the match with a service winner.

Leaving the court in tears, Gauff waved to the crowd at Rod Laver Arena.

Australian Open Cori Gauff Dayana Yastremska

Yastremska stuns Vondrousova, makes the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2020

On Day 2 of the 2024 Australian Open, Dayana Yastremska produced the biggest upset of the event so far, dispatching No.7 seed Marketa Vondrousova in commanding fashion. The Ukrainian, a former world No.21 and a qualifier this year, dominated the reigning Wimbledon champion with a swift 6-1 6-2 victory, marking the first Top 10 upset of the competition.

Dayana Yastremska

The 23-year-old Yastremska hit 26 winners compared to Vondrousova’s five and broke serve five times. The world No.93 finally ended her streak of consecutive first-round exits in the past seven Grand Slam tournaments, as Vondrousova struggled on serve throughout, hitting seven double faults and failing to find her rhythm. Yastremska, who endured a six-month doping accusation ordeal in 2021, will play the second round of a major for the first time since the 2020 US Open.

This triumph marks Yastremska’s fourth career win against a Top 10 player, and notably, her first at a Grand Slam. It has to be said that Vondrousova was playing her first tournament of the season, having missed last week’s Adelaide International due to a right hip injury.

During the post-match interview, Yastremska emotionally addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, sharing a personal story about a rocket hitting her grandmother’s house while she was playing in Brisbane earlier in the month. She expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the importance of remembering and supporting Ukraine during these challenging times.

In other notable matches, seed No.19 Elina Svitolina, who missed the Australian Open last year while being on maternity leave, returned triumphantly by defeating Australian wildcard Taylah Preston with a decisive score of 6-2 6-2. Coco Gauff dominantly started her quest for a second straight Grand Slam title with a 6-3 6-0 victory over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

Later on Monday, the highly-anticipated comeback of four-time major winner Naomi Osaka takes center stage. Following the birth of her daughter, the former world No.1 is set to face Caroline Garcia of France in the first round, in the last match scheduled on Rod Laver Arena.
