During Jelena Jankovic’s tough three-setter against Czech Lucie Safarova, Jankovic’s mother had to leave the players’ box since she wasn’t feeling well — she has a heart condition and such a stressful match was too much for her.
Here’s what world number three Jelena Jankovic said about this:
“Watching me is not the best thing for her, although I just want to try and get through without giving her anything to worry about. She has problems with her heart and she hasn’t been great for a while. She’s not healthy and I want her to go and see a doctor as soon as possible.
“I think it would be better for her to stay away from my matches, because they are quite stressful for parents. But she is my No 1 supporter and I love having her in my box. It’s great for me to have her there.
“I just want her to be happy and I want her to get checked out. That’s the most important thing. Tennis is just a game and there are many other more important things in life than winning a match. My mum is more important and so is her health. That’s why I hope I can do it in two sets and give her less stress.”
