Former world No.4 Jelena Dokic plans to return to competitive tennis in 2008 and is hoping to revive her shattered career through the Australian Open.
Having no ranking points, Dokic’s way to the Australian Open won’t be easy. However, she is happy with her progress and has taken the first step by requesting a spot in the wildcard play-off. The winner of the play-offs is awarded a main draw wildcard into the Australian Open.
“I’m training several times every day and my fitness level has improved substantially,” said Dokic, who spent her younger years in Australia after emigrating from her native Serbia with her family.
“The play-off is a chance to earn a spot in the field for the Australian Open and that is my end goal this summer.”
“I’d like to think that by the end of 2008 I could be somewhere in the top 50. I know that’s something I can do.”
Before the Australian Open, the 24-year-old Dokic will also try to play on the Gold Coast and in Hobart.
The playoff starts at Melbourne Park on December 15 and runs through to December 21. (sources: Sportal, AFP)
