Injured Amelie Mauresmo, Na Li withdraw from Australian Open warmup

Amelie Mauresmo and Na Li have withdrawn from the Medibank International, the last major tuneup event before the Australian Open.

Mauresmo has re-injured her left thigh, while Li has a right knee injury.

“Unfortunately I have re-injured my left adductor,” said Mauresmo, who last week returned to action for the first time since October. “I felt it yesterday during my training session and did not practice today. This is an injury that I am familiar with and know that it will not get better overnight.”

Li, who yesterday crowned her impressive comeback with the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts title, said: “The problem with my knee seemed to get a little worse after I tried to practice this morning and I just could not move very well.”

MORE INJURIES: At the Moorilla Hobart International, world No.34 Anabel Medina Garrigues retired from her first round match against Australian Casey Dellacqua because of a lower back injury.

I was hoping for a season with as little injured players as possible, but we got the exact opposite. It’s hard to believe the 2008 season has just began.
