World number one and top seed Ana Ivanovic was stunned by 188th-ranked Julie Coin in the second round of the US Open and it’s the earliest exit by women’s top seed at the US Open since tennis turned professional in 1968. Ouch.

The 20-year-old Serb didn’t blame her recent thumb injury for the defeat, but rather her lack of match practice. She said her right thumb had totally recovered and she felt no pain.

Ivanovic is aware of the fact that she hasn’t justified her top ranking: “If you are asking if I’m playing like a number one, no.” However, she denies the pressure of being top ranked player was the problem.

Ivanovic has been struggling for form since her triumph at the French Open in June.
