The semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open are shaping up. By defeating Agnieszka Radwanska on Wednesday, Vera Zvonareva became the third Miami semifinalist this year, and her opponent in the final four will be either Kim Clijsters or Victoria Azarenka.

In the match against ninth-seeded Radwanska, Zvonareva double faulted at 4-5, 30-all in the first set to give the Pole a set point. However, she saved it with an ace and won three games to win the set. The second set was easier for the Russian, who has a chance to return to No.2 ranking, and she advanced to the semis with a 7-5 6-3 victory.

The other semifinal will feature Andrea Petkovic, who toughed it out against Jelena Jankovic, and Maria Sharapova, who had her fair share of hard time against Alexandra Dulgheru in the quarterfinal match that lasted almost three and a half hours. (photo: sr_cranks)

  1. The more I watch Vera the more I like her current form. IMO her game is consistent and it appears that she’s thinking with a good amount of accuracy on the court. She’s proven that she’s got enough offensive power and defensive skills to go deep in big tournaments (and has won several).

Vera will never be as popular as Caroline, kim and Maria etc but nonetheless, from this viewpoint her game is strong enough to win a slam and certainly good enough to win Miami again. Granted, Vika is talented and tough. Don’t see Andrea or Maria winning this one.

  2. Vera will always be a bridesmaid, her losses against Kim were disappointing and she better cushion her ranking be winning in Miami otherwise she will be on a freefall after Wimbledon or USA Open.

  3. is anyone sickened by the tennis commentary by Jo Durie,Virginia Wade,ESPN,TC its like they are so scared of Maria s sponsors that they have to give excuses or over the top nonsense…totally fed up.

Yes, Vera had some memorable meltdowns on court in the past, however likely we both agree that she’s handled herself well enough on court in the last year.

Yes, her losses in slam finals against Kim and Serena were disappointing, BUT she did well to reach the finals. Even Caro has never beaten Kim in any match. Agreed, Vera has a lot of points to defend but so does Kim and Caro. Sometimes the bridesmaid becomes the bride.
