Samantha Stosur‘s dream season now has another memorable mark besides the US Open title – the veteran defeated Maria Sharapova for the first time in their ten meetings in the long history of seven years.

In their five previous matches, the last one of which dates back to 2006, Sharapova never lost more than four games per set, but today her dominance over Stosur encountered an obstacle and the Australian was victorious in the first match of the White Group at the WTA Championships.

After storming through the first set in 28 minutes, Stosur saw herself 0-3 0-40 down on her serve in the second set. The Australian, however, fought her way back and won the match 6-1 7-5. Sharapova made stunning 30 unforced errors to Stosur’s 17, and scored one winner less than her opponent – 17 to 18.

It was Sharapova’s first match since ankle injury in Tokyo four weeks ago.

Let’s see how Stosur will do tomorrow. She again faces a player whom she’s never defeated before – Victoria Azarenka. They’ve played four times so far, but not this year yet.
