No.1 Azarenka saves two match points to win absolute marathon against Kerber

It has been by far the most thrilling match of the WTA Championships. In short, in the first set Victoria Azarenka wasted four successive set points and one more, while Angelique Kerber used her fifth to win the set, in the second set Azarenka saved two match points to take the match to the decider and in the third set Azarenka broke Kerber for a 5-3 lead, but failed to serve it out, eventually winning on Kerber’s serve in the following game, converting the first of two match points. Scoreline: 6-7(11) 7-6(2) 6-4.

Furious groundstrokes, outrageous shots, big returns, aces, winners, brave drop shots, we’ve seen it all. The quality of the match is also evidenced in the fact that both the players had a positive differential of winners to unforced errors: Azarenka +5, Kerber +6. The battle lasted three long hours and seven minutes, pushing the encounter of Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska to about 11 p.m. Istanbul time.
Unfortunately, it counts only whether you win or lose and Kerber is now 0-2 in the Red Group, having lost to Serena Williams yesterday. Azarenka is yet to play her second match of the round-robin stage. It will be tomorrow, against Serena. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

  1. James, it’s such a pity that Kerber is 0-3 after losing to Li today. On paper her result looks bad, but in reality her performance was good.

  2. Marine, not much to regret, except those two match points wasted 😛 Overall, Kerber did leave a mark at the Championships.
