Seed No.18 Carla Suarez Navarro became the first quarterfinalist of the 2013 US Open by winning her first career meeting with eight-seeded lefty Anquelique Kerber in the first women’s singles match on Day 7.

In the first set Navarro was a break up 4-2, but in the end lost 6-4 in 45 minutes. The situation was similar in the second set, as the Spanish player was also leading, 5-0, before Kerber managed to approach to 3-5. This time, however, Navarro won the set, 6-3 in 44 minutes. The match was unpredictable from start to finish and was decided in the tiebreak of the third set, which Suarez Navarro quickly ran away with 7-3. Final score: 4-6 6-3 7-6(3).

This is Suarez Navarro’s first quarterfinal appearance at the US Open and she will meet world No.1 Serena Williams, who is leading their head-to-head record 2-0. Williams started her fourth-round encounter with Sloane Stephens much later, but finished it just minutes after Suarez Navarro, 6-4 6-1. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
