Bojana Jovanovski ousts top seed Sorana Cirstea at Guangzhou Open

Fresh off her Tashkent Open title, unseeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia, ranked 41st, eliminated top seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the first round of the Guangzhou Open and with three breaks in each set won 6-2 6-1 in just over an hour. The Serb claimed the first of three upsets on Tuesday at the tournament and will meet Vania King of United States in the second round, which will be their first time facing each other.

The other two upsets were matches between Vesna Dolonc of Serbia, ranked 91st, who defeated seed No.5 Urszula Radwanska of Poland 7-5 6-2 and Timea Babos of Hungary, ranked 105th, stunned seed No.7 Varvara Lepchenko of United States 7-6(8) 7-5.

Seeded players who passed into the second round after today’s action are second seed Alize Cornet of France who defeated Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3 6-1, third seed Laura Robson of Great Britain eliminated Jovana Jaksic of Serbia 6-2 6-4, and forth seed Peng Shuai of China beat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-3 6-4.
