Doha 2014 WTA semifinalists

We’re having an interesting outcome of the Qatar Total Open quarterfinal action as the longest match lasted one hour and 15 minutes, while of the eight sets played at this stage of the Doha tournament, the one containing the most games had only nine.

The first to advance to the semifinals was sixth seed Angelique Kerber, who needed just 50 minutes to knock out Petra Cetkovska, the conqueror of top seed Li Na in the previous round, 6-1 6-0. The German’s opponent in the final four will be fifth seed Jelena Jankovic, who had lost just five games in her first two matches and now continued that form with an unexpectedly straightforward victory over third seed Petra Kvitova 6-1 6-3.

The second quickest quarterfinal was between seventh seed Simona Halep and fourth seed Sara Errani. In their only previous meeting, Errani demolished Halep 6-1 6-0 and today the Romanian avenged that loss with a 6-2 6-0 victory in 52 minutes, despite an injury in her Achilles. The last player to join the semifinals was second seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who cruised past Yanina Wickmayer 6-2 6-1. (photos: © Neal Trousdale)
