Lauren Davis

World No.66 Lauren Davis had never beaten a Top 20 player, let alone a world No.4, but on Friday she made tennis headlines by taking out Victoria Azarenka in the second round of Indian Wells, even bageling the Belarusian in the first set. Final score: 6-0 7-6(2).

Azarenka was evidently troubled by her foot injury sustained a few days prior to the Australian Open, where she played and reached the quarterfinals. Azarenka resumed practicing just a week ago, after having worn a walking boot for three weeks. Just like at the Australian Open, Azarenka decided to play through the pain at the BNP Paribas Open and even though evidently troubled by the nerve damage in her foot she didn’t retire and allowed her opponent to get a regular victory.

In other news, there are rumors that Azarenka and her boyfriend Redfoo are planning to get married in India, precisely, in Jaipur. The LMFAO rapper is having gigs in India on March 22 and 23, but they will travel to the country several days prior to his performances. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

  1. I love this blog and am a massive fan of your work but i don’t think the title is fully respectful to davis victory.. ” Azarenka’s injury gives Davis the biggest win of her career”. obviously vika was injured but davis won the match herself… again i’m a massive fan just thought i said what was on my mind.

  2. Maria, thank you for the comment and for reading WTB. Regarding the title, those were the circumstances, it wasn’t Davis’ fault that Azarenka was injured, so we’re certainly not disrespecting her.
