Only seeded players make Miami quarterfinals

Quarterfinals are set in Miami and you will notice that all the players in the final eight are seeded. Top seed Serena Williams, second seed Li Na and seed No.11 Caroline Wozniacki lost just seven games between them to advance.

Williams won an all-American encounter with Coco Vandeweghe 6-3 6-1 and has now reached the quarterfinals or better 13 times in 14 appearances in Miami. Li won the first seven games against Carla Suarez Navarro and lost a total of just two games in the 61-minute match, 6-0 6-2, while Wozniacki was even more ruthless, beating Varvara Lepchenko 6-0 6-1.

I love this quote of Li – she said her husband and Suarez Navarro have the same playing styles:

My husband hits a pretty similar ball to Navarro. A little bit of topspin, a one-handed backhand. It was good for me.

In other fourth-round matches, Maria Sharapova beat Kirsten Flipkens, Petra Kvitova lost the first set to Ana Ivanovic and then scored a double bagel 3-6 6-0 6-0, Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Elina Svitolina 7-6(5) 5-7 6-2, Angelique Kerber got past Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 1-6 6-3, while in a night thriller, Dominika Cibulkova won an excellent match against Venus Williams 6-1 5-7 6-3.
