In the last quarterfinal match of the Sony Open, Li Na beat Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 7-5 and made yet another tennis milestone for her country, becoming the first Chinese woman to reach the semifinals at the tournament.
“Today it felt like I was playing the best defender on the tour – I felt like I was playing against a wall,” said Li after the match in which she hit six times more winners than her opponent (31 to 5), but had twice as many unforced errors as the Dane.
Li’s semifinal opponent will be Dominika Cibulkova and it will be a rematch of the 2014 Australian Open final. Actually, Li and Cibulkova are the only players on the WTA who have achieved 20 WTA match wins this season. Cibulkova advanced to the Miami final four earlier on Wednesday, in one of the best matches of the season, saving three match points against Agnieszka Radwanska. Li has beaten Cibulkova in all six of their previous encounters.
The other semifinal was determined on Tuesday and Maria Sharapova will try to beat Serena Williams for the first time in ten years. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
