While Women’s Tennis Blog is at the Topshelf Open, headlined by the 2014 French Open runner-up Simona Halep, our blogging friend James of Moo’s Tennis Blog is at the AEGON International in Eastbourne and today he witnessed the spectacular match between Victoria Azarenka and Camila Giorgi, which after two hours and 46 minutes ended with the defeat of the Belarusian, who was playing her first match since March and only second since January, due to a foot injury.
With her game clean and aggressive, except for the slew of double faults (17!), Giorgi earned a 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory over Azarenka. The fourth-seeded Azarenka actually served a lot of double faults too, 10, and when the match was tied 1-1 in sets, we could really not tell which player was going to get through into the second round. With the Eastbourne crowd enthused over the match, the 42nd-ranked Giorgi recorded a victory in this competitive encounter that helped Azarenka test where she stands ahead of Wimbledon and after the long layoff. All in all, considering that she hadn’t played for so long, her level was quite good. (photo: Jimmie48)
