The US Open series is arriving in Montreal and Women’s Tennis Blog will be reporting live from the 2014 Rogers Open all week long.

The Canadian stop on the WTA tour is one of the most important lead-up events to the US Open as all elite players of the game meet in Montreal next week, the only notable absentees being Simona Halep and Li Na, the Chinese had to withdraw from the complete USO series due to injury.

With the qualifying rounds scheduled to kick off tomorrow, today was all about the practice session as many of the tournament’s top players have arrived at Uniprix stadium.

While other players are still busy playing in Stanford, Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska, Sabine Lisicki, Sam Stosur and plenty of others put in the hours on the practice courts, much to the delight of the fans that came out in impressive numbers, despite not a single match being played on Friday.

The highlight of the day was Maria Sharapova’s practice session inside the Uniprix stadium as the Roland Garros champion attracted hundreds of spectators, many of which managed to grab an autograph or a photo with the WTA’s most popular player afterwards.

While the practice courts were buzzing, Petra Kvitova attended the tournament’s draw ceremony, the two-time Wimbledon champion was given a warm welcome by the fans and media as the locals held no grudge against the player who fiercefully destroyed Genie Bouchard’s Wimbledon dream just a few weeks ago.

Proper match action at the 2014 Rogers Cup will kick off tomorrow and Women’s Tennis Blog will be there to cover all the action for you, so keep checking back!

  1. Great photos as usual, but I’m sorry, despite your previous answer, it is not possible on my iPad to find the titles.

  2. Love the shots, especially these “Everybody wants a snap of Maria” and the “Little tennis photographer”. I like your approach how you give us a complete picture – from the stadium and tournament setting, to players and fans.

Anne Raynaud, hmm because the hover option is not working on tablets and cell phones. I’ll check with Jimmie48 if we can do something about it.

Sorciere, oh thanks for sharing. Yes it is Sharapova’s US Open outfit. I will write about it today.

As for Aga, I’m always a fan of polka dots, but at the US Open I think she will wear this less girly look – a simple navy and yellow combo: http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Lotto_Womens_Autumn_Nixia_Dress/descpageWALOTTO-LWAND.html?from=wtb

  3. I would like to see this dress for Maria, but I didn’t find any photos.
Navy-blue dress for Aga is also cool, but she had the same dress on spring (just other colors).

  4. That US Open dress for Aga reminds me of Woz’s US Open/fall 2010 dress! Makes me think of those times, Woz playing super well, Dementieva and Kim were still still playing… good times. God, it seems like so long time ago.

  5. Anne, the current system works via mouse-over which can’t work on tables since, well, you don’t use a mouse 😉

I’ll look into finding another solution, this may take a while and is certainly nothing that will be possible this week. But I’ll look into it, I promise.

  6. Jimmie48, I haven’t explored how these galleries are made yet, but maybe there is an option to write captions or something like that.
