There was a joke ahead of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global saying “Put your hand on your hip if you aren’t going to win this tournament” and it turned out to be true – Serena Williams won the season-ending spectacle for the third straight time and for the fifth time in her career.
The legendary Williams cashed in $2 million by beating Romanian Simona Halep in the final, the player whom she had lost to in the round-robin stage of the tournament (her worst loss in 16 years, 6-2 6-0). Today, at the pinnacle of the tournament, Serena comfortably avenged that defeat with a 6-3 6-0 victory, even though it was Halep who recorded the first break of the match, in the third game.
Serena marched to the Singapore trophy wearing the Winter Burnout Tunic, featuring a subtle cheetah print on back, and the black and white animal print wristbands. Make sure to check back for our fashion overview of the WTA Finals, tennis clothing commentary is our specialty. 😉
I said it! And the award for the most stupid player goes to Halep. I knew that second set against Ana would come to bite her in the ass
Simona Hale has earned my utmost respect and I am sure the respect of countless tennis fans with the integrity of her effort. She has greatly enhanced the image of a sport when so many other sports have their reputations going down the drain with issues involving match fixing and drug use related issues. At the end of the day when she does win her first grand slam there should
be no question marks about the integrity of her effort on the court. It is something that many sponsors should look at in holding her up as a role model for young and up-coming players.
Of course that should have read Simona Halep. Congrats to her again on helping to make the tournament so interesting. Strangely enough she will be forever respected in Singapore, a small very successful nation that has built it’s reputation on respect for the law, an absence of corruption in politics and overall on an extremely civilized society.
Great tournament. Many surprises and the final score expected by everybody. Too bad for spectators that there is nobody to stop Serena when she is playing well but maybe it shows her great class…
Kudos to Halep for being such a good sport. Her day will come very soon!
