Sunday at the 2015 AEGON Classic provided an interesting mix of qualifying action and first-round play as the traditional grass tournament on the British seaside went into its second day of competition.
Thankfully for the plenty of tennis fans, the horrible weather forecast could not have been more wrong as it was warm and sunny all day. Still, the conditions were quite challenging for the players, since a stiff sea-breeze was rocking the venue all day, making serving extra tricky.
Eight qualifiers made their way into the main draw: Magdalena Rybarikova, Lauren Davis, Irina Falconi, Christina McHale, Marina Erakovic, Polona Hercog, Alexandra Dulgheru & Jarmila Gajdosova all punched their ticket for the tournament’s main event.
While the qualifiers were still fighting to make it into the tournament, several first-round matches completed as Belinda Bencic won in straight sets over Mona Barthel, while Coco Vandeweghe got past Sweden’s Johanna Larsson.
Sunday was a mixed day for the British talent. Johanna Konta made the tournament’s second round with a win over Zarina Diyas, while Naomi Broady came close to upsetting Sloane Stephens, but the slam semifinalist managed to escape an early loss.
Main draw action will continue on Monday, including the comeback of Dominika Cibulkova, Eugenie Bouchard’s next try to get a string of positive results going, as well as the very interesting duel between two WTA rising stars as Madison Keys & Belinda Bencic will go head to head on center court.

Look at Sloane’s mini white dress with almost backless design. Will she rock this dress in Wimbledon? It actually looks good but I think the length is the issue. An inch or two longer perhaps?
Emman Damian, good observation! I have actually featured it in my June best-dressed article for the WTA 🙂 It should be published soon. I suppose she will wear the dress at Wimbledon, but I don’t have such a confirmation.
