The main draw of the 2015 Toray Pan Pacific Open got underway in Tokyo’s Ariake Coliseum on Monday and one of the WTA’s most traditional Premier tournaments goes into its next edition.

Held inside the Ariake Coliseum, the event has lost its Premier 5 status to Wuhan last year. Nevertheless, even the Premier-level tournament still manages to attract plenty of great players into the Japanese capital as Ana Ivanovic, Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki and plenty of others have signed up to play the 2015 edition of the event.

The competitive main draw field is joined by four qualifiers, with Yi-Fan Xu, Ana Konjuh, Kateryna Bondarenko & Olga Savchuk having fought their way through the three-round qualifying that started on Saturday.

Once the qualifiers were done, it was time for the first batch of first round matches, the first of which already had surprise in store as Camila Giorgi sent Caroline Garcia off to China after just one match.

On center court, Barbora Strycova faced off with Naomi Osaka, one of Japan’s most promising youngsters that entertained the local crowd with some spectacular tennis before giving way to the experienced Czech player in straight sets.

The day was rounded out by the first appearance of one of the tournament’s marquee players as Agniezska Radwanska completed her first round match against American Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets.

First round action at the 2015 Toray Pan Pacific Open will continue on Tuesday. Keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog for all the latest from Tokyo all week!
