First-round play at the 2015 Toray Pan Pacific Open completed on Tuesday in Tokyo as some of the tournament’s most popular player completed their first matches inside Ariake Coliseum with flying colors.
Following Agnieszka Radwanska’s win on Monday, all other big names smoothly sailed into the second round and the tournament is yet to see its first major upset.
Among the victorious players on Tuesday were Sam Stosur, who got past Alison Riske, as well as Angelique Kerber, who had no problems beating Daria Gavrilova in straight sets.
Undoubtedly the most impressive performance of the day was delivered by Belinda Bencic, though. The 2015 Rogers Cup champion completely dismantled China’s Yi-Fan Xu in just 43 minutes of match time. The Chinese player had made her way through the tournament’s qualifying stages, but soon learned that playing an in-form Top 15 player is a completely different animal, as Bencic didn’t allow Xu to take home a single game.
The last big-name player to make the second round was Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova. Like Bencic, Cibulkova spent less than an hour on the court, as opponent Mirjana Lucic-Baroni had to retire one game into the second set.
Second-round action at the 2015 Toray Pan Pacific Open will start on Wednesday, including the opening match of top seed Caroline Wozniacki. Keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog for all the latest from Tokyo all week!
